Solution 40 · Rural bridges and low-level crossings · South Africa

Know before the water takes the crossing.

Strain, tilt and water-level sensors on bridges and drifts feed . It scores structural risk, recommends when to close, and ranks repairs, so the community gets a warning and a safe route before the road is lost. An authorised person confirms every closure.

Strain on pier

Illustration only.
Honest scope. It does: monitor, score risk, recommend closures and repairs. It does not: close a road by itself, replace engineering inspection, or guarantee safety. This solution requires current AI models to operate.

Why: failure without warning

  1. Heavy rain raises the river
  2. Water reaches the deck of a low crossing
  3. Scour undermines piers and approaches
  4. Drivers and walkers still try to cross
  5. The structure fails or is cut off
  6. The community is isolated: clinics, schools and markets unreachable

Unmonitored

Few rural crossings have any sensors.

Sudden

Flash floods rise faster than inspection cycles.

Critical

One drift can be a community’s only road.

How it works

Ingest: strain, tilt and water-level readings
Score: GPT-6 Luna detects structural risk
Explain: GPT-6 Sol writes closure recommendations
Pattern: GPT-6 Astra builds prioritised repair lists
Verify: Image 2 supports visual inspection of photos
Visualise: map, status badge and sign state
Human decides: an authorised officer approves the closure

AI helpers

GPT-6 Luna

Detects structural risk from strain, tilt and water data.

GPT-6 Sol

Writes closure and reopening recommendations in plain language.

GPT-6 Astra

Produces prioritised repair lists across many crossings.

Image 2

Supports visual inspection of photos for cracks, scour and debris.

Human Reviewer (mandatory)

An authorised officer or engineer approves, edits or rejects every recommendation.

Indicative AI cost: roughly R2–R15 per crossing per month at prototype scale, excluding sensors (estimate, not a quote). Candidates: Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Vertex AI, NVIDIA edge inference.

This solution requires current AI models to operate; the models listed (or their current equivalents) are essential to the production system. Model identifiers must be checked against current provider documentation; outputs on this site are simulated.

3D model: crossing safety helper

Water over deck:

Legend: amber box = strain sensor · teal probe = water sensor · triangle sign = closure warning (lit when closed) · flat board = alternative route map · yellow block = vehicle.
How this model works. The sensors sit on the bridge and in the water. As the river rises, the water sensor and strain sensor report to the system. Below 30 cm the crossing is STABLE and the vehicle drives over. Between 30 and 60 cm it is ATTENTION and the sign starts to flash. Above 60 cm it is HIGH-RISK: the sign lights red and the vehicle turns to the alternative route. In the real system an officer confirms the closure first. Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom.

Impact

“I grew up where one river crossing decided whether a child reached school. I want every community to get a warning before the road is gone.”
— Founder,

Drivers & communities

Earlier warnings and clear safe routes.

Municipal roads teams

Prioritised repairs instead of guesswork.

Clinics & schools

Fewer cut-offs during rains.

Funders

Evidence trail on where money protects access.
Why we think it can work: officers already close crossings by judgement; this adds data and keeps the human decision. Impact claims are aspirational design intent for a prototype, not measured results.
